A paper describing a method to label neurons with specific birthdates during cerebral cortex development has been published in the journal Development. Using this method to investigate gene expression and chromatin structure during the early stages of neuronal differentiation, we found that genes critical for neuronal function acquire an open chromatin state prior to their actual expression. These findings suggest that chromatin structure establishes a preparatory state during the brain's developmental process, shedding light on one of the fundamental principles underlying the functioning of our brain.
